Getting started

  1. Download FavSlots from the Mac App Store and open it. A short welcome shows you the gesture and lets you fill your nine slots: click a slot, pick a suggested app, or drag apps in from Finder.
  2. Unlock FavSlots with a one-time purchase to turn on the shortcuts and the overlay. You can set everything up first.
  3. Press ⌥1 to switch to your first favorite, or open it if it isn’t running. Hold ⌥ for a moment to see all your favorites.

To change your favorites later, click the FavSlots icon in the menu bar and choose Edit Favorites…, or just open FavSlots again.

Troubleshooting

FavSlots uses Control-Option instead of Option

On keyboard layouts where Option + a number types a character you need (such as # on a British keyboard, or [ ] { } | @ on many European layouts), FavSlots starts with ⌃⌥ (Control-Option) so you don’t lose those characters, and tells you why. You can switch to Option, Control-Option or Control at any time in Settings › Shortcut. See keyboard layouts.

A shortcut doesn’t work

  • Make sure FavSlots is unlocked: before purchase, the shortcuts are paused and the main window, Settings and the menu say so.
  • Only slots with an app have a shortcut. An empty slot leaves the key combination to other apps.
  • If another app or a macOS keyboard shortcut uses the same combination, FavSlots shows the conflict in the Favorites window with a link to change your shortcut.
  • On macOS 15.0 and 15.1, shortcuts that use Option alone aren’t available to App Store apps. FavSlots switches to Control-Option on its own and explains why. macOS 15.2 and later work normally.

The app is already in front and nothing happens

That’s by design: FavSlots switches between apps, not windows. To move between the windows of the app you’re in, use macOS’s ⌘`.

A favorite shows “Choose App”

The app was removed or is on a disk that isn’t connected. Click the slot to choose it again, or another app.

The overlay doesn’t appear

Hold the modifier on its own for about half a second. It stays hidden while you type, while a menu is open, during a drag that started before you pressed the modifier, and when you have no favorites yet. You can turn it on or off in Settings › General.

Restoring your purchase on another Mac

Sign in to the Mac App Store with the same Apple Account, open FavSlots and choose Restore Purchase in the Favorites window, in Settings or on the last welcome step.
